John Stones Rejects Wigan Move and Heads for Everton

Clive Brunskill

One of the three players we wanted today, it looked to be going so well. Then Everton cemented their interest and the defender has now gone from Latics grasps.

John Stones the highly rated young defender looked to be heading to Wigan come lunch time today. A deal agreed between Barnsley and Wigan with the player heading our way. What a signing, even if McGeady didn't come a young wing back who is expected to come big would be a great coup for the club, and with none else looking to do business we surely had this one tied up.

The England under-21 international even came for a medical for Latics, passed and believed to be in talks about signing a contract. That was before the blue half of mersyside stuck their noses in.

Everton had long been linked with the player, and in the last hour Barnsley have accepted and offer from the toffees, seeing Stones reject any sort of offer from Latics, and scamper off into Liverpool.

All that expectation has gone, and Wigan could be left with only loan Paul Scharner as the memory of this transfer deadline day.
