Latics 2-4 Sunderland

New, 2 comments

We were on course to break a two-year record where we have yet to win two games on the bounce since March 2009. That is an awfully long time in football, and it's why we are in the situation we are now. The last time we won two on the bounce, Steve Bruce was in charge, was that a change of fortune for Latics. What ever it is that is stopping us winning two on the bounce, after yesterdays result we now have to win at least three out of our remaining four games to really see us safe.

The game started very much as anyone would imagine with plenty of Sunderland pressure. But with some great defensive work, and Ben Watson looking very much in control in front of our back four. The score was able to remain 0-0 at half time, and I don't think either manager would have complained at half time.

Within seven minutes of the first half, we had our break through. Diame scoring again in this fixture, after scoring in the same tie last year. Putting us 1-0 up and looking good for our lead. It looked like our record was on course to be beaten and we were to pull clear of the drop zone.

One basic thing about football, is when you score keep hold of the ball for five minutes or so and kill the game. Don't give stupid free-kicks away, and don't stupidly pass the ball. All of which we managed to do, as a fighting Sunderland side managed to turn the game on its head.

Even with a massively depleted side, Sunderland pulled back leve, and then went on to get in front 4-1. Maybe had Alcaraz decided not to slam Sessegnon and give Sunderland the penalty for them to go 3-1 up. Then we may have got back into the game and still got the three points.

But that goal sealed our fate and saw our heads drop and our game fall. The only really high light from the game is Di Santo's first goal for the club. Hopefully he can add more to his goal in the following games to come.

All in all it was a typical Wigan display. Full of potential but still things are missing and sometimes we just look out of spirit. If there is one thing we should look at, it was how well Sunderland thought back. They were down and have been for most of the second half and still manage to fight on. That kind of fight is what Wigan need coming into these last four games of the season.

Next weekend, we face Everton at home. Who have been on an impressive run of form at the moment. With a win desperate and needed, every player will have to be at his best to compete and get three points from the game. It is also time for us fans to start doing our bit more now. Coming into the last two home games, we need those six points. Any atmosphere we can create which will last a full 90 minutes will help the lads ten fold.
