So after our one match campaign in the Carling Cup, its time to turn our attention back to the Premier League. The weekends opponets are Everton, who have had an up and down season so far. It gives Latics a chance to go out and correct the wrongs from the last two games and get some points on the board.
Everton have only played three Premier League games this season, haveing missed the open day due to the London riots. But already their first three games have had ups and downs. First they lost to newly promoted side QPR, then they managed a win against Blackburn, and last weekend they got pegged back to a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.
Off the pitch hasn't been much better for toffee supporters. First the world saw the signs of the next Everton graduate in Ross Barkley, as other clubs look on enviously at he ability already at the tender age of 17. Then the chairman came out and said there was no money for them to buy players. While on the finally day of the season they lost Mikel Arteta to Arsenal.
It couldn't get much worse for them.
So going into the game, it is hard to say how Everton will fair. They haven't been on top of their game so far this season, but it only takes one game to spark a team off.
Going into the game, we are still without Steve Gohuri and Antolin Alcaraz. While Emmerson Boyce is a doubt, a thigh injury against City kept the full back out against Palace, he is expected to return at the weekend. We also go into the came on four of our players full club debuts. So our team is more or less complete, just two absentees.
Everton's man to watch is an ex-Latic in Leighton Baines. The left back has come on leaps and bounds since signing for Everton four seasons ago, and has got himself into the England set up. But it is his attacking ability that Wigan will have to watch.
That deadly left foot can create something from nothing, any set pieces around the edge of the box is a scoring chance when Baines is there. While running out our right back and whipping in crosses gives defences no end of problems.
With that in mind what will happen?
Well I would love to see a Latics win, but being realistic I see the game heading much towards the result the last time the two sides met, a 1-1 draw. Neither team is hitting their full potential, and are slowly getting into their own stride.
