Billy who? That maybe what some of you are wandering as I tell you that we are lining up a £3 million bid for a striker who is playing for a team in the Championship’s bottom three. However this lad is very good. The 25-year old started his career at Sheffield United and has that style of Yorkshire grit, that we so love to have.

Both Southampton and Ipswich have reportedly been interested in signing the player, yet neither of them could match the £3 million that is needed to release Billy from his contract at Doncaster.

He has had a very good career since bursting onto the scene in 2004. Scoring a total of 118 goals in 225 appearances, which I think you will agree isn’t that bad. Yet none of them have come in the Premier League, here is where the but comes.

We have of course signed many players over years from the Championship and hoped they would go out and score the goals we need in the Premier League, the likes of Jason Scotland and Marlon King are names that spring to mind.

Yet this Mr Sharp reminds me very much of Jonathon Walters, who I think you will agree, is successfully plying his trade at Stoke City in the Premier League.

Billy has the physique and the level of skill to play as the lone man up front; controlling the ball before laying it off, while if you have seen him play for Doncaster, he is very good on the turn and finding that extra yard to get space for a strike.

He could be a cheap replacement for Hugo Rodallega who could be on his way out if he can’t agree a new contract with the club, before the January transfer window opens.
