This game had all the makings of one that was about to fall flat on its face before the whistle had even been blown. The choice of referee for one thing Andre Marriner, the man who gave the Blackburn corner goal, his star role would come in the second half.
The first half was dominated by poor tactical nose or Roberto Martinez, and is ability to change a winning formula. Last time he made changes to a winning side, against Sunderland in January we lost 4-1. This time round we would go 2-0 down to Swansea with the same out come.
If you change your team around, you don't bring in a player who hasn't even featured for a month. Let alone keep the worst player in the our team in the starting eleven.
The first ten minutes actually looked promising for Wigan. Having the lions share of possession and looking to get the ball wide and open Swansea up. Yet that wouldn't last for long, and eventually Swansea would play the way they can, open and fluid, much how Martinez wants Wigan to do.
Yet they would play for the majority of the match in front of the Latics back four, whom for the most part would play rather well. Only Maynor Figeroua bucked the trend, who had a poor day at the office. But not even he would lead us to lose the game.
The Swansea first goal was acctually a counter after the result of Wigan's best move of the match.
Jean Beausejour playing a quick one to two with James McCarthy, before firing a brilliant cross into the box for the Waiting Franco Di Santo. All credit to the Argentinian he got his head to the ball, but some how managed to miss the open goal.
From the result of that Swansea would go down the other end. Jordi Gomez who had been on the end of the Wigan attack walking back as he does. Leaving his marker with acres of space on the Wigan right side, to curl a ball into the top corner on the stroke of half time.
The half time brought two changes. Mohammed Diame and Victor Moses both came on for James McArthur and Connor Sammon. Wrong James, and really it should have been Gomez to go off.
That would prove fatal as ten minutes into the half. Gomez would push over Swansea forward Danny Graham, a bit softly, but the referee gave the freekick about thirty yards from goal. Up stepped Gylfi Sigurdsoon to score his second of the afternoon. It was another great hit by the player who was Swansea's only real threat all day.
Now the referee was making a bit of a name for himself and five minutes after Swansea went 2-0. Jordi Gomez and Nathan Dyer went in for a completely 50/50 challenge, Dyer only slightly clipped Gomez on the ankle. Painful as that is, yet the referee seemed to decided it was a red card. What was the referee doing?
It clearly was freekick but a red card? For a fair challenge. Ridiculous isn't the word for it. That lost control of the game, following that. Alan Tate would come on and set off a brawl.
He had fallen of the pitch injured and took it upon himself to roll of the pitch. Rodallega went over to tell him to shift, before Tate jumped up to square up to him. The following brawl, saw Wigan's Diame booked for what reason I don't know, and Swansea's Ashley Willaims again what for. Neither player had done anything but to try and stop the situation.
From then on the referee and lost control of the game.
But even that would not get Wigan a goal as we saw some of the worst attacking play in my life. Rodallega who looked fresh and up for the game when he came on, moved about and opened up plenty of space. But either none could find him, or just didn't seemed bothered.
So it was a lost when three points were need. But what can you expect from Wigan? We still sit bottom and will do till next week. When I hope our superior away from kicks in against Norwich.
