Over the summer I am looking to reduce my time at the computer mainly if you write about Wigan Athletic, you end up repeating yourself over and over and maybe over again. And that gets tedious not only for you reading about it, but for me writing about it. So when I returned tonight to see what I could talk about (I already had a Pie Eaters Footie exclusive about Marco Pappa lined up) I was shocked to see what a busy few days it has been for the media and Latics.
First of all it appears that we are looking to sign players, bit of a shock. But the originally hoped five players seems to be getting increasingly smaller with each passing day. Martinez now keeps talking of a few new additions, and if Victor Moses does leave this summer, then that would have to be increased to at least three.
So this post is really just going to be a sum up of all the links that are out there, with more in depth analysis to follow in the next few days.
Adrian Mariappa
First up is a central defender (for me we do need one) Mr Mariappa was believed to have been on his way to Wigan in January for a fee in the region of £2 million but could not finalise his own personal agreements with the club. That was what reports said. Now it looks like we are in for the defender again this time with an offer of £2.5 million which is believed to be the amount that Watford want for the player.
He is a highly rated young defender and would add something to the ageing group of defenders we do have at teh club. I do hope this link is true.
Chung Young Lee
A highly rated international winger who would bring everything you need for the wide man position all at the bargain price of the £3 million. The report suggests that he will be the replacement for Victor Moses as Wigan look set to lose their resolve to the next Chelsea offer. So where is the snag? The man plays for Bolton.
Now I know what tour thinking Ali Al Habsi, but the chances of us signing one of their key players for such a low price seems ridiculous to me. Although he maybe one of the higher earners at the club, and Bolton do have to reduce their wage bill, so there could be some method in the madness. Yet I reckon this one should be shelved for the time being.
Victor Anichebe
The Everton striker could be set to make the £4 million switch to the DW Stadium this summer, with a former Latic set to sign for Everton. That is of course Hugo Rodallega, who is believed to be in advanced talks with Everton. Which has allowed David Moyes to give the green light to Anichebe to talk to Wigan with a fee having been agreed.
This deal does look like it could be one that happens especially with Martinez a known admirer (god I do repeat myself).
Conor Sammon
Last but by no means least is a player who looks like he could be on his way out of Wigan Conor Sammon. The big striker has only managed to score one goal for Wigan in his time at the club (that being the equalizer against West Ham United, you don't get more important than that). Yet since that day the player has done everything else but score. Hit every inch of post, headed every ball and forced keepers into world class saves.
But with Derby County now knocking for the player with a fee believed to be just under what we paid for him. May we off load out Irish striker?
