January Transfer Window Week Three: New Keeper Signs, Yet Other Options Needed

So last week the club made their third signing of this window, the signing of the new keeper was important. Mike Pollitt in the week picked up a hamstring injury, and is unlikely to return for a few weeks, while Lee Nicholls is not ready to be Ali's full time deputy. Now though we need new defenders, and hopefully one more attacker.

Last week was the tying up of one deal which has been there or there abouts since the start of the window. Joel from Athletic Madrid has been in Wigan since the start of the window on trial, and the club stepped up and agreed a six month loan. Possibility we could sign the keeper in the summer.

Another player believed to be courting with the club is Leeds forward Luciano Becchio. The Argentinean striker has been in fine form this season scoring 20 goals in all competitions. His contract is up in the summer, so he could possibly be in talks of signing for the club come June. Reports did suggest we are making a move now.

The player could command a good wage, in terms of our budget. If we are to move for him now, a fee of about 3 million could be in order. Yet waiting to the summer seems the more likely thing, when his fellow compatriot Mauro Boselli leaves. When Boselli was scoring against Bournemouth in midweek, it was reported that Becchio was in crowd.

The other good business Wigan completed last week was the signing of Shaun Maloney to a three year contract. The player has been the catalyst for all the good performances we have had this season, and hopefully that will continue for the long term now that he is here to stay.

Keeping our experience players is something we need to do. With Adrain Lopez, Antolin Alcaraz, Franco Di Santo Ronnie Stamm all on the last year of their contract. Making them follow suit will be important.

Speaking of the for mentioned defenders. New defensive options, is an area that Martinez is now having to look to strengthen. Many names have been mentioned, with some players coming in on loan, while other possible players on a free. This is going to be a debate to watch as the window draws on.
