Preparing for Transfer Deadline Day with Wigan Athletic

This could be one for the busiest transfer deadline days for Wigan Athletic in a while. The club need a few players, an experienced center back, a wing back and an attacking winger. All of the above have been lined up, and Roberto Martinez is reportedly closing in on his men.

Here is your one stop guide for all that could happen in the next 26 hours as we head to the end of the January Transfer window. So lets jump straight in with a deal which looks like it could be done early tomorrow morning.

Earlier in the week Paul Scharner was quoted as saying he wished to come back and help Latics fight against relegation. This was after rumours suggested he could be heading to Sunderland on loan till the end of the season. An approach was made by Sunderland reportedly, but one was also made by Roberto Martinez who confirmed such a move before the Stoke game.

Scharner has good ties with the club, and I think we can all safely say he played his best football here. Now a tweet made by Mr Scharner earlier this evening (or yesterday evening depending when you read this) had the location of West Lancashire on it. So what was he doing here? Preparing to sign a deal to sign on loan till the end of the season.

So one bit of business done for Latics. Am experienced center back now in.

Now to our other defensive move, to sign a right wing back. It has long been reported that the club have been chasing John Stones of Barnsley, and it appears we had a £1 million bid turned down by the Yorkshire club. Are we to go back in for him? Its a possibility but we have other deals lined up.

Newcastle are looking to off load Danny Simpson for £500,000, and Martinez is reportedly interested in the talented player. He would defiantly fit into our back line and has good Premier League experience to boot.

The other player we have got a deal agreed for, is the loan signing of Inter Milan full back Jonathan Moreira till the end of the season. It is widely agreed that Inter have accepted our loan offer with a chance to make it permanent in the summer.

Which one of the above three? Only time will tell but it is possible the club will sign one of them tomorrow.

Now to the big transfer of the window for Latics, the signings of an attacking winger. We need someone to replace Victor Moses there can be no argument about that, it has been a question of who though.

Throughout the window we have been linked with a move for Aiden McGeady from Spartka Moscow. Yet the Russian club reportedly wanted a fee in the region of £8 million for the winger, and Martinez wasn't willing to fork out that much for him.

So we turned our attention to South America, and 23 year old Ecuadorian international winger Jefferson Montero. The club wanted to bring him in on loan for the remainder of the season from Mexican club Monarcas Morelia, with view to a permanent deal in the summer. Monarcas said they wanted £5 million now for him, Wigan were only willing to go to £3 million. A deal still in the offing?

This is where it now gets interesting. A good source for Wigan Athletic news Alan Nixion has suggested on Twitter that the club are in for a big signing, and reports suggest it is a winger. The other thing Nixion has said is that it will be a bit of a coup. This suggests then that the club could be in for McGeady again.

Currently it a choice between McGeady and Charles N'Zogbia, the latter I don't think is likely. But then with another fan favourite returning why can't N'Zogbia?

Whatever happens, it will be a busy last day for Wigan Athletic this season.
