Roman Golobart (a.k.a the Pink Iguana if you follow him on twitter) has been a player just on the edge of the Latics team for the past two seasons. Injury after injury hampered his progress till last season when a year at Inverness CT where the defender showed his worth.
He rose in stature as a defender gaining confidence and experience, while becoming a fan favourite for the Scottish club. Roman then returned in the summer and went on tour withe the first team and impressed with the lads away in Austria, and impressed Roberto Martinez.
Yet with ample defenders, Golobart was loaned to Tranmere Rovers and allowed to progress further in the English game. Then returning after his month loan, he played against Bradford City and showed us his talents. Strong, quick and agile both on and off the ball, showing just what a player he could be and already is.
His true talents were showed as he lead the line against Bournemouth and Macclesfield, playing the central defensive role of three players. In the three game he impressed us the fans, and even impressed Martinez. Enough to start in the Premier League?
Well he started against Stoke City and coped with the physical football they play, and controlled himself really well. Defiantly a worthy winner of January's player of the month, he could feature at the weekend with Gray Caldwell having returned early from international duty with an injury.
