Arouna Kone: Wigan Athletic’s Febuary Player of the Month

The man goes away for a month and comes back a hero. The humble player that is Arouna Kone has been the light at the end of tunnel for many Wigan fans this season. His gut bursting runs, and never say die attitudes fill you with hope, this month he managed to back them up with goals.

Rewind to Febuary 9th, and Wigan are facing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Apart from losing the game 4-1 there were a few promising signs. None more than the return of Arouna Kone, an hour into the game and step forward the returning Ivorian. Half an hour to run round at Stamford Bridge and charge some energy out, it was the usual Kone performance.

Latics then travelled to the John Smith Stadium where the fun began for Kone. Two goals in the 90 minutes where the perfect way to make his starting return to the side. Helped by an in form Callum McManaman, Kone bagged a tap in for his first, followed by a sublime strike when he had time and space.

It wasn’t long before Kone was at it again, this time scoring two against Reading. The first again a lucky tap in; yet the second was a wonderful finish. Again with time and space in the box, the striker was able to delicately chip the oncoming Adam Federica.

So three games played and four goals scored what more can you add? Kone is starting to peak and hopefully he can keep that run up to the end of the season. Speaking after the Reading game Kone said he now feels at home with the club, and having managed to bag 10 goals so far this season, he is closing in on being a record breaker as well.

With eight Premier League goals to his name, three more and he could break Hugo Rodallega’s tally for most goals scored in a Premier League season at the club. And all that coming in his first season, hopefully he can score plenty more in the final run in.
