Wigan Athletic's defensive situation is something which we has been a problem for the past two seasons. We have been unable to consistently field the same defensive line up and have struggled to keep most of our defenders fit. Currently Gary Cadwell, Ivan Ramis and Thomas Rogne are all sidelined, combine that with the complete disappearanceof Juan Carlos Garcia and we are struggling for numbers in defence.
Currently fit we have Emmerson Boyce, James Perch, Leon Barnett and Stephen Crainey; Jean Beausejour has filled in at left back when he has been needed this season; so over January it was crucial to sign defenders. The idea looked to be see Ivan Ramis and bring in three defenders in his place. That was Jack Hobbs on a permanent deal along with Craig Dawson and Tyias Browning on loan deals.
However Hobbs went to Nottingham Forest, and it now looks like Craig Dawson will remain at West Bromwich Albion. West Brom are now having their own defensive problems and the 23 year old defender will be given his chance in their first team.
It is likely that Wigan would not have taken up the deal for Dawson with the club having signed Swedish defender Markus Holgersson on a free transfer in the past few days.
