Paper Talk: Wigan's Mystery Striker Target Named

The news broke coming out of the club all week was that two deals where on the verge of completion. One deal was the signing of James Tavernier, the other was for an unnamed striker. Well the mystery is over as the strikers name has been unveiled.

Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno

Last season our striking options was our Achilles heel. Both Grant Holt and Marc Antonie-Fortune failed to really hit their mark, and it came down to Nick Powell and Jordi Gomez to be out top two goalscorers. Fair enough midfielders chipping but we need a goal scoring striker.

Early season news saw us linked with a few different players. Then it appeared we were leading the way to sign USA international Terrence Body from Rapid Vienna, that deal looks to have collapsed and Wigan turned their sights as well.

Uwe Rosler and staff looking at Osasuna striker Oriol Riera. The striker starting his football education at Espanyol before moving to Barcelona where he played as part of their C and B teams. The striker never really hit his potential and struggled moving to lower league Spanish clubs.

Last season he moved to Osasuna after impressing at Alcorcon. This season in Spains top league the striker continued to impress bagging 13 goals in 37 games for Osasuna. Now that has gotten attention over here in England for the striker.

Reports earlier in the week in Spain had the player linked with a Premier League move. The player having a release clause in his contract of a fee €2.5 million, it looks like Wigan have activated that clause and the player is interested in a move to the club.

Sources out of the club are hinting at this being a done deal and that the player will be joining the club. Lets hope that are right, and that Rosler and his staff have managed to get hold of a striker who can change our fortunes up front come next season.
