Season Preview: Analyzing the Attackers

A massive shortage of goals saw us tumble to relegation last season. Well we were promised a 20 a goal season striker and we have signed one, the question is, is he and the rest of our forwards up to the test?

The one area you knew there would be a major overhaul the summer was going to be in the forward department. Uwe Rosler's flops of last season are now gone along with James McClean and Martyn Waghorn to make space for Gary Caldwell's own brand of attackers. So far his recuritment drive has looked good.

For one thing he has brought in proven strikers at this level of the game. Will Griggs, Samni Odelusi, Craig Davies and Michael Jacobs have all played and performed well at this level and still have their best years ahead of them. Add that to Billy Mckay and Grant Holt, it looks an attack force that should be able to get some goals.

Gant Holt is still a few weeks away from being match fit, the rest though should all be up and ready for match day one.

It looks very much like we will be playing with two forwards under Caldwell. A more nimble player who will run the lines combined with someone who can hold the ball up and lay it off to his strike partner. Is this partnership reminding you of anyone from Wigan Athletic's past?

If we can find a partnership which is half as successful as Jason Roberts and Nathan Ellington, well we will be doing a lot better than we have done in the past four or five season. The key though is finding the right partnership.

It of course looks very much like Will Griggs will be the main man, so who do we play around him? Do we look to add pace with the likes of Jacobs and Odelusi or do we add the physical ability of Davies. Either way it gives us different options which hopefully will allow us to adapt from game to game. Something we defiantly lacked last season.

One thing I don't think we can question this summer is Gary's indecisiveness of who he is looking to sign. The manger has done a very good job and brought in a good mix of youth and experienced payers that we will need to challenge in this League.
