As ever July brings about the end of players contract at clubs up and down the country. Much like last season it could have seen us crippled in terms of player numbers with ten players leaving the club, as it turns out we have lost seven of those players currently. Five of whom were officially released the other day.
So its time to say farewell as Stephen Crainey, Jean Beausejour, Marcus Holegersson, Jordan Mustoe and Adam Buxton depart. They join Jordi Gomez and Daniel Redmond as they leave the club on free transfers this season. You may notice three players are yet to be accounted for.
They are Mike Pollitt, Gary Caldwell and Emmerson Boyce. Pollitt has of course joined the coaching staff here at the club, and Boycie seems to have another year added onto his contract (although no official statement has been released he remains a Wigan player). Finally there is Gary Caldwell, out for most of last season with continuing hip problems the captain is an important leading figure at the club.
Reports in the week suggested that he could be making the switch to Panathinaikos, as of yet nothing has been forthcoming and the defender did travel out with the squad to Germany last week. That would suggest he is very much part of Rosler's plans, whether that be on the pitch or in an off the pitch role.
During the closing part of last season Rosler spoke of just how important Gary was to the team not just as a player, but the leader he is on and off the pitch. He very much comes under the category of a Mike Pollitt type player as a big personality to have a round the club.
So we say farewell to players once again, and to wish them all the best in their future endeavors and to say thank you for your service to the blue and white of Wigan Athletic.
